About You / What We Are Looking For

 

The City has an opening for a Lead Hand Forest Management in the Urban Forestry Operations team in the Parks Division in the Parks and Capital Projects Department.

 

Reporting to the Natural Areas Supervisor, the Lead Hand Forest Management will implement a range of forest management activities and community engagement initiatives. These activities will be carried out directly by the Lead Hand - Forest Management including invasive plant species removals, habitat restoration plantings, community stewardship projects, monitoring forested ares and data entry related to the monitoring activities. A small crew of seasonal labourers, that the Lead Hand Forest Management will supervise, will aid with these activities. This position will work Tuesday to Saturday and work with volunteers, community groups, local businesses and school groups to maintain and enhance the City’s forested areas. This is hands on work with community members and a small number of seasonal staff.

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Sound knowledge of local ecosystems, native and invasive plants species identification and habitat restoration practices. Previous experience supervising a crew is also valuable experience to bring to this position.
  • A diploma in biology, forestry or natural resource management as well as experience with habitat restoration and enhancement would be considered an asset.
  • Possess Pesticide Applicator Certification as a requirement of the position, however, candidates without certification may be considered provided they successfully complete this certification during their probationary period at their own expense.
  • A Driver’s License for the Province of British Columbia (with a satisfactory driving report) is required.

Preferred Qualifications

·         Applicants with municipal experience may be considered preferentially
