About You / What We Are Looking For
The City of Coquitlam is seeking an innovative, driven, and financially savvy professional to join our team as a Strategic Finance Specialist. This exempt position reports to the Manager, Business and Innovation and is part of the Finance and Legal Division within the Deputy City Manager’s Office.
In this role, you will bring a strategic financial lens to high-profile, City-wide initiatives. You will collaborate with internal departments, external partners, and occasionally other municipalities and levels of government to support complex projects that shape the future of our community.
As the Strategic Finance Specialist, you will contribute financial expertise to a variety of City initiatives, providing innovative analysis and strategic recommendations to colleagues within the Finance Division and across the organization. The role requires a high degree of independent judgment, initiative, and leadership in managing projects, conducting analysis, and supporting decision-making.
This is a dynamic, project-focused position suited to someone who thrives in a collaborative environment and has demonstrated experience leading cross-functional initiatives, reviewing processes and policies, and developing clear, well-structured reports, procedures, and recommendations.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelors Degree in Commerce, Finance, Business Administration and/or another relevant discipline.
- Chartered Professional Accounting Designation.
- Minimum of 5 years of senior level related financial experience.
- Understanding of long-term financial planning as well as the various local government revenue sources.
- Knowledge and experience with related legislation including the Local Government Act, Community Charter and Public Sector Accounting Board Standards and other relevant Provincial and Federal legislation.
- Excellent financial analysis and problem-solving skills
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and communication abilities
- Demonstrated political awareness and organizational acumen
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading or supporting complex financial analysis and strategic initiatives
- Exceptional critical thinking skills with the ability to evaluate processes and recommend improvements aligned with departmental and City-wide priorities
- Experience researching, developing, and implementing policies and procedures
- Strong relationship-building skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Proven ability to thrive in project-based environments with clear deliverables and timelines
- Advanced knowledge of budgeting, long-term financial planning, financial modelling, and business case development
- Experience working within a municipal or regional government environment (minimum 1 year preferred)
- Experience in a consulting environment is considered an asset
What We Offer:
This excluded position has an annual salary range of $113,373 to $127,529.The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.
