About You / What We Are Looking For
The City of Coquitlam is seeking a collaborative and technically strong leader to join our Engineering and Public Works Department as Supervisor, Engineering Inspections. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced professional to make a meaningful impact by leading inspection services that support the growth, safety, and quality of infrastructure in one of BC’s fastest-growing communities.
In this role, you will lead a well-established team of eight experienced inspectors who are trusted, collaborative, and proud of the work they do. You will be hands-on in supervising inspection activities for a wide variety of capital projects and land development projects — from large-scale utility upgrades to complex development agreements. You’ll also play a pivotal role in ensuring safety, compliance, and long-term quality of infrastructure in one of BC’s fastest-growing communities.
This opportunity offers much more than just a supervisory role — it is a chance to grow alongside a strong leadership group that values innovation, mentorship, and succession planning. With many senior leaders planning for eventual transitions, there is clear room to advance for the right person who demonstrates commitment and leadership.
Key responsibilities include:
- Leading, assigning, and mentoring a team of inspectors working on both capital construction and land development projects.
- Providing expert judgment and real-time guidance to field staff on inspection decisions and standards compliance.
- Setting up and chairing preconstruction meetings, reviewing drawings and technical documentation.
- Liaising with contractors, developers, utility companies, consultants, and City departments to ensure high standards of delivery.
- Participating in specification reviews, policy updates, and inspection process improvements.
- Representing Engineering in managing public inquiries and site-level issues with professionalism and responsiveness.
- This role is a fit for someone who thrives on team leadership, technical problem-solving, and being at the center of municipal growth and change.
Minimum Qualifications
- A diploma in Civil Engineering Technology or a related discipline.
- Considerable experience in civil infrastructure inspection and construction, preferably in a municipal setting.
- Demonstrated supervisory or lead-hand experience, ideally within a unionized environment.
- Membership (or eligibility) in the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of BC (ASTTBC) or equivalent.
- Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License.
- Strong understanding of municipal construction practices, development servicing, and contract administration.
- Intermediate knowledge with Microsoft Office core computer software programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, etc).
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification as a Public Works Inspector III (PWII or PWIII).
- Familiarity with Master Municipal Construction Documents (MMCD) standards.
- Experience overseeing both capital works and land development projects, and understanding how to adapt supervision and compliance to each.
- Proven ability to manage and mentor inspection teams, balance administrative duties with field support, and provide technical decisions under pressure.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to build trust with internal teams, contractors, and residents alike.
