About You / What We Are Looking For
We are currently seeking a Visual Communications Supervisor for our Communications and Civic Engagement Division. Reporting to the Manager of Civic Engagement, the Visual Communications Supervisor plays a key role in the City’s brand and graphic design standards for both print and digital materials, as well as supporting the City’s website strategy and related online services.
Supervising a small team of technical professionals engaged in graphic design, website management and print production, this position also provides strategic and technical advice in support of corporate branding, digital communications and print production activities.
The ideal candidate will possess exceptional communications skills as well as strong interpersonal and customer service skills and proven experience in managing a corporate website and/or production services. These skills should be supported by strong technical knowledge and a demonstrated ability to think creatively and strategically, while exercising sound judgment. Your capacity to collaborate and help bring corporate initiatives to life visually across a wide range of City projects is essential to success in this role.
Along with a degree or diploma in communications, marketing or public relations, preferred candidates will have related technical training in web and graphic design or print production, along with considerable experience in corporate communications and website management.
Minimum Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in corporate communications and website management.
- Thorough knowledge of principles, objectives, methods, techniques and policies of communications and production work relevant to municipal operations.
- Considerable knowledge of graphic arts, photography, video, print production, digital communications and website management.
- Ability to establish and apply graphic and design standards and provide strategic and technical advice.
- Ability to plan, train, assign and supervise the work of subordinates engaged in website management, graphic design and print production.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective liaison and working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts.
- Considerable knowledge of operational budgets and procurement best practices as well as the ability to administer project contracts and oversee the work of vendors engaged in website services and production activities.
- Proficiency with the MS Office Suite, HTML, website content management systems, and the Adobe Creative Suite.
- Degree or diploma in communications, marketing or public relations supplemented by technical and supervisory courses related to the work, such as graphic and web design or print production, plus considerable related experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Supervisory experience, preferably in the public sector or a unionized environment.
- Working knowledge of municipal, board and community planning processes and the social, economic and regulatory environment in which the City operates.
- Strong analytical, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Strong oral and written communications skills.
What We Offer:
This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $47.67 - $56.34 (2025 rates). The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.
